In 1983, Prof. Sigram Schindler founded TELES GmbH as a high-tech
company for operating systems/communications/text and security technology.
Close collaboration with the Technical University Berlin, played
a key role in the early years of the company. In a very short space
of time, TELES' research and development activities made the company
a much sought after partner for major international enterprises,
especially in the area of R&D for telecommunications standardization
in international standardization bodies (ISO, CCITT/ITU, ETSI, IETF,...).
The company shifted its emphasis in the early 1990s to the development
and marketing of its own trendsetting products for the telecommunications
market, products that have since brought the company much success
in the mass market. TELES later focused on Web hosting services for consumers and the small
business sector, a move that proved to be groundbreaking. The rapid
growth in the number of domains hosted by the concern transformed
TELES very quickly into one of the market leaders in the area of
Web hosting worldwide. At the end of 2004, the Web hosting business
was sold to freenet.de, allowing the company to concentrate on the
areas of business promising the best growth dynamics for the future,
wireless broadband Internet access services via satellite (skyDSL)
and switching systems for voice and data services.
According to Impulse, the economics magazine, TELES AG was one of
the 50 most successful companies in Germany in 1996. Most recently,
TELES AG made third place among TecDAX companies in a study carried
out for Focus Money on company earning power and the quality of
the information contained in the annual reports.
